A category of secondary pump used to create a high vacuum environment. A set of high speed turbine blades spin between adjacent sets of stator blades, creating a compression wave that sweeps gas to a higher pressure exhaust region. Gas is removed from the high pressure region by a complimentary roughing (primary) pump.
